The True Story of the Ultimate Lightsaber

Luke’s lightsaber is one of the most iconic images in all of cinema. It has spanned three trilogies and more than 50 years of movies. It has also been tied to tales in many components of the Star Wars expanded universe. It’s easy to say that it’s the most storied item in the Star Wars universe, and its journey spanned three generations of Jedi.

The Beginning

This special lightsaber was originally created by his father, Anakin Skywalker. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t Anakin’s first time building a lightsaber. Instead, the Jedi’s original lightsaber was lost when he battled Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones. Of course, the lightsaber wasn’t the only thing Anakin lost in that fight.

After that fateful battle, Anakin constructed a new lightsaber — the classic blue weapon we all know and love.

In Luke’s Care

This became the very lightsaber that Obi-Wan Kenobi gave to Luke in the original Star Wars movie. It had that same faded blue color, and it accompanied Luke through his early years of training. Ultimately, it was lost again when Luke battled his father in the cloud city. Ironically, Luke also lost a limb when the saber left his care.

After it fell from great heights, fans thought the saber would never be seen again. Luke constructed a new, green lightsaber, and the story continued. Fate, it seems, was not yet done with Luke or his historic weapon.

Finally to Rey

There is some as-yet undeveloped lore, but the lightsaber eventually made it into the hands of Rey in The Force Awakens. How it got there is a matter of some intrigue; perhaps some day we’ll know for sure. While Rey was reluctant to take ownership of the weapon, she eventually used it to defeat Kylo Ren. Eventually, that same saber was destroyed in The Last Jedi when Rey and Kylo Ren fought over it.

Rey managed to rebuild the lightsaber and used it in the final battle against the sith. With her work done, she buried the saber and put it to rest.

Luke’s lightsaber is clearly an amazing component of the Star Wars legacy. It has a rich lore and history within the stories. Beyond that, it is the toy every kid dreamed of having for multiple generations in real life. When you think of legendary items, it’s hard to imagine something that can eclipse this legendary item.
